The Old West - Fort Worth Stockyards

The city of Fort Worth is often referred to as "Where the West Begins. The Fort Worth Stockyards are the last standing stockyards in the United States.

The Cattle Drives takes place twice daily If you’ve never seen a herd of Texas Longhorns in a cattle drive, you don’t want to miss this. What an amazing sight!!!

The world’s largest honky-tonk (127,000 square feet of space), Billy Bob’s is Texas-sized western entertainment. It sports a 4,800 sq.-foot rodeo area, 32 bars, 600 feet of bar rails, a gigantic dance floor, and a 1,650 sq.-foot stage where the world's biggest country western stars perform.

The Fort Worth Stockyards are a must in Any Visit to Texas. What an interesting place!!

Dallas Mavericks Basketball

Last night I was invited to a suite to go and watch the first playoff game between the Dallas Mavericks and Oklahoma City Thunder. One of the best atmospheres for a sports event I've ever been to, it was amazing. Everyone was given a Blue T-Shirt so notice all the blue in the audience!

The American Airlines Center

We had great seats in a suite, with free food and alcohol. Always a bonus!!!

The Mavs Won, another really fun evening!!

Kentucky Continued

My meeting with Colonel Sanders!!

We visited on the many Bourbon distilleries in the Frankfort area, actually around 95% of all bourbon is made in Kentucky, a legacy of the Irish and Scottish settlers who crossed the Alleghenies after the American revolution. They found a new frontier rich in sun and limestone water, perfect for barley, wheat and corn, and whiskey.

We visited the Buffalo Trace Distillery, producing since1870.  Located on what the company claims was once an ancient buffalo crossing on the banks of the Kentucky River in Franklin County, the distillery is named after the American bison that created paths followed by America's early pioneers. I really liked the idea of this!!

The sampling was great - Not just good bourbon, but a baileys style bourbon and cream. And bourbon balls - dipped in molten chocolate instead of being cooked, which allows them to retain the flavor, and punch, of their namesake. This is a real southern favourite.

We arrived in Lexingon and stayed with Sarahs sister and her family, which included her Husband and two cute young boys, aged 7 months and 2 years! Due to our arrival they had a 'cook-out', ate burgers, had beers and played games out (Like Corn hole, shown in the photo) in the sunshine. A lovely day!!

Sarah then took me around downtown Lexington.

She showed me around the University she went to, called Transylvania. A strange name? Transylvania, meaning "across the woods" in Later. The name stems from Transylvania University's initial founding, within the heavily-forested region of western Virginia, which became most of Kentucky in 1792.

You probably think all we did was drink, Bourbon, Mint Juleps etc.. Here's one more!!

We did a tasting of Kentucky Wine and Beers, but this one really stood out. Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale. 'A unique sipping beer with the distinctive nose of a well-crafted bourbon'  Aged for up to 6 weeks in freshly decanted bourbon barrels from some of Kentucky’s finest distilleries, very heavy, alcoholic, rich yet tasty!!

Now Back in Texas, will update soon.

Kentucky Derby

We Planned a Trip to Kentucky to visit some of Sarahs family, and luckily for us, it was also the same weekend that the Derby was taking place!!!

It is held at Churchill Downs in Louisville (Properly pronounced by the locals - Lou-a-vul)

Thanks to Sarahs’ grandmother we found ourselves watching the derby, sharing a box with some fun people, enjoying many amint julep!!

Made a few bets on the races, but I think i'm all lucked out about now, so I didnt win anything!!

The Kentucky State Song being played

The 2011 Kentucky Derby was the 137th renewal of The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports....WOW, what a fantastic day it was!!

We arrived into Kentucky on Friday and the Derby was on Saturday, the plan then was to travel to Lexington, the City where Sarahs' Sister and her family lived.
